The Jungle LAST CHAPTER!! (:

In this chapter I thought it was nice that Jurgis was trying to persuade Marja to not be a prostitute; this sad how she says no because she is addicted to morphine. I also think that it is sad that she plans to be a prstitute for the rest of her life! :(  I think that when Jurgis attends the meeting it is good that he tells the public the secrets of the meat packing industry, he also tells them what they are doing is wrong. Towards the end where it is talking about socialism, I think that it is great that a speaker says that "Chicago will be ours" because they are getting faith and they are believing in what they think they can achieve. Overall, I thought that this book was boring, gross and sad.  THE END

PS: I am so happy that this book is over, but it sucks we have another book to read over break.

Chapters 29-30

These chapters were more hopeful and fulfilling than the other ones, and so I liked them. In these two chapters I felt that Jurgis is becoming a better person, this could be because he joined a political party that has his interests too. In chapter 29 I like how Jurgis goes and talks to the speakers; he wasn't afraid to go and talk to him. In chapter 30, I liked how Jurgis went and visited Teta Elzbieta. He tells her about socialism, and that he wants to get a job and help support the family. I think that this is nice because maybe if he gets enough money than Marja with be able to stop her prostitution and drug habits and then she has time to look for another job that is better. That makes me happy that he wants to support the family with his money and not go spend it all on alcohol. In this chapter it also made me happy because Jurgis found a job. He is a porter at a small hotel and makes thirty dollars a month plus board! He must be happy. I also like how he starts to like to read and learn about the political and economic systems of power in America. However, he does get frustrated when he tries to persuade people in to socialism and they refuse or ignore him. I enjoyed reading these chapters because it seems like Jurgis is finally changing and becoming a more involved and helpful person in America.

Chapters 27-28

I think that in chapter 27 it is sad that Jurgis gets a job, but then he gets fired because he is not strong enough for the work that needs to be done. I also think it is sad when he goes to visit Marja and the police keep running after him. Its sad when she tells him that neither of them could support the children with jobs. The part that grosses me out is that Stanisolvas died by getting attacked by rats. I think that Marja is bad because she went into prostitution to keep the rest of the family from starvation. In chapter 28 Jurgis has to listen to a speech but I don't really understand why. In the end of chapter 28 he found a political party to represent his interests rather than those of the privileged, powerful, and wealthy. It made me feel happy when he found people who have the same interests.

Chapter 26

     Chapter 26 (:
Overall, I think that this chapter is okay. I think that it is good that Jurgis is going on a strike; he wants three dollars daily for working and he receives it.  I think that it is good that Jurgis gets offered a job as a boss on the killing beds, so he then will get more money. The thing that is bad about this chapter is that Jurgis sees Connor in public and he attacks him again. This was stupid on his part because he has to go back to jail and pay out his bail. When he is finished paying his bail all he has left is four dollars. So he travels to the other side of Chicago. I think that in this chapter Jurgis is just getting in more trouble than he was. I hope he stops getting in so much trouble.

The Jungle chapters 23-25

I thought chapter 23 was happy but sad. In chapter 23 Jurgis found a new job digging underground tunnels. The sad part was he thought that he was going to have his job all winter but he had an accident and spent Christmas in the Hospital. I thought that was sad that he had to spend Christmas in the hospital. In chapter 24 I think it is sad that he is with other homeless people trying to stay warm in the winter. I think he should go and try to find Teta and ask to live with her and her family. I thought it was nice how Freddie gave him food and money. In chapter 25 I think that Jurgis should have told the bartender that he didn't give him the right amount of money instead of attacking him. Then he goes to jail and then he goes and starts getting in trouble and mugging. I thought that was a bad part on him because he is going to keep getting in trouble and drunk and losing his life. I think that Jurgis should stop his drinking habits because everytime he gets money he goes and spends it on drinks. I thought that these chapters were mostly about Jurgis getting in more trouble in life.

Chapters 20-23

These chapters were kind of happy at first and then they turned bad. In chapter 20 it is good that Jurgis got another job. It was good at first and then he found out that his job is closing down. So he ends up loosing his job. In chapter 21 it is talking about Jurgis getting another job but it is to far away from his home, so he only goes home sometimes. When he does go home he finds something very depressing and sad. Jurgis finds out Antanas died. :( It’s sad that he has more family dying after some family already died.  This part was really sad because Jurgis just had his wife and second kid die not to long ago. In chapter 22 I think that it is sad because Jurgis just leaves. He goes on a train hiding there and he goes to the country. I think that this is sad because he left everyone else he was with to leave to the country. He then meets a farmer who sells him dinner, lets him sleep there, and offers Jurgis a job. I think that it is disappointing that he works for two weeks and gets a lot of money, and then he goes and spends it all in one night. I think that he should of traveled back to his family and helped pay for stuff for them.

Chapters 7-19

I thought that chapters seven through nineteen were sad and depressing. I thought it was sad when Ona got raped at work by her boss and then when Jurgis went to her work and beat him. Jurgis went to jail and it was gross there. The small cells with bug infested mattresses were what they had to live with. That was horrible and disgusting. I thought it was cute when they had their first baby Antanas and then when she had her second one and both Ona and the baby died at the second birth. It is sad how the whole family lost their home and jobs. They had to move and it was sad that they had a new baby and they had to move to the boarding house. The baby died because Ona didn’t have a midwife and she needed one. Now Jurgis is like an alcoholic and takes Kotrina’s money to go get drunk. I thought with the baby, Ona, and Kristofora’s death that these chapters were depressing and also how everyone lost their jobs and they lost their houses. If Teta Elzbieta’s son died from eating bad meat then I wouldn’t eat meat after that. These chapters are very sad and I hope that Antanas doesn’t die.

The Bell Jar

I started to read the book The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. So far this book is about a girl and her friends being in high school. They go and hang out and they smoke cigarettes and they drink. The main character is under the name as Elly, but th at’s not her real name. They call her Elly because she didn’t want to tell the guys her real name and where she was really from. They spend all night out and they order drinks. They order drinks and get drunk. Elly only orders straight vodka. Then they go over to Lenny who is Doreen’s boyfriend. Doreen and Elly are staying in a hotel together. When they go over to Lenny’s house Doreen is drunk and her and Lenny and they bite each others ears and take off shirts, it’s weird. Then why they are doing that Elly walks back to her hotel which is forty-three by five blocks away. By the time she gets back to her hotel she is sober. When she gets home she goes and gets in the bath. She likes really hot baths, like as hot to where it may burn you to put your foot in. She sits in the bath and feels that it makes her feel purer. Elly gets out and then goes to bed. Later on that night she hears knocking at her door and she hears someone calling her name. Doreen is at her door. She doesn’t feel like getting up so she waits awhile. She then gets up and she carries her in the door. Doreen is so drunk and so she puts her on the floor because she starts puking. She leaves her there for the night and when she wakes up in the morning the puke is cleaned up and Doreen is no longer in the hallway. She woke up in the early morning and she went to her bed.

The Jungle chapters 4-6

My partners are Bre and Alyssa.

I felt that chapter four was going pretty good. In this chapter Jurgis was talking about how he thought that children should go to school and get an education. I think that they should because to get an education would be good for them because we learned that knowledge is power. Therefore if the children go to school and get an education then they will eventually gain knowledge. I agree with Jurgis.
In chapter five some people were complaining about their jobs. The meatpacking industry is nasty and i find it disgusting.
In chapter six it was about Ona and Jurgis getting a house. The bad part of this chapter was that the realtor lied to them about paying interest. They had got the house and talked to the old lady who told them about the house and the past of it. She also told them that they had to pay interest on the house and they looked at the deed and they had to pay $12 a month plus the $7 interest. Though the old lady didn't have to pay interest because they lied about her son and how much he makes.
I think that this is a weird book.........

My essay topic

My topic was to create an argument that demonstrates how owning another human being can corrupt a person and negatively alter their character. The thing that I am trying to argue is that owning another human being can corrupt them and it can alter their character in life. I am stating facts that say why owning another human being is wrong and why it affects the slave. This is affecting how they think of others like they can become prejudice and/or racist and how it corrupts them in life by separating them from family and ruining their self esteem.

Chapter 11 reaction

In this chapter Fredrick was planning to escape. I liked how he escaped but he was hungry and homeless in New York. Then he met Mr. Ruggles who took him in so he had a place to live. At the end of this chapter it is talking about Fredrick going to anti-slavery meetings and was able to say what he wanted to. I liked how he finally got married and was happy.I was happy that he escaped slavery and was free. In the end at the appendix Fredrick talked about how religious people could be so cruel to the slaves. Religious people are usually nice and respect others but these people were different and they were mean to the slaves.

Questions:
1. How could the religious people be so mean to slaves and not think that it is wrong?
2. Why did Fredrick trust Mr. Ruggles?
Comments:
1. I felt happy when Fredrick escaped and was free from being a slave.
2. I like Mr. Ruggles.

Questions and Comments

Questions
Why did the slaveholders give holdiays off for their safety?
Why did the battle mode make Fredrick realize that he wanted to be free?
     Why did he enjoy teaching?

Comments
     This chapter was confusing.
I liked how he wasn't the only one wanting to be free an run away.

Chapter 10 reaction

I like how in this chapter Fredrick talks about him reading more. I think that when they were talking about the root that it is like a symbol that other slaves should do it so they can stand up for themselves like Fredrick did. This was talking about Fredrick talking about the north. This chapter was sad and weird and I liked how in this chapter Fredrick stood up for himself. Slaves should start to do what fredrick did.I like how Fredrick is starting to make more friends and have somewhat of a family.Mr. Freeland is a very nice guy it seems like and Fredrick says that he is one of the best slave masters he has had.

Reaction to chapters 8, 9, and part of 10

These were very sad and happy chapters to read...

Chapter 8
This chapter wasn't so sad as the other ones were. Reading chapter eight was sad how he had to move and he was missing the Baltimore boys that he shared and traded bread for lessons. I thought the saddest part was when Fredrick's grandma had served to the master faithfully and yet he took her to the woods, built her a little hut, and was saying it was her privilege that she supports herself there in her own loneliness. This is sad because she soon dies there and there was no one to help her or be there for her death.

Chapter 9
This chapter was also sad. It was sad and made me want to cry when he was talking about the lady (Henny), getting beat. Henny had fell into a fire when she was younger and she was burned very badly. Her hands were so burnt that she barley got to use them. The master beat Henny until she bled and sometimes he would tie her up all day and leave her there to whip her later. :( This was really sad. This chapter was also sad when Fredrick was watching his masters horse and he would let it run away to his master's father-in-law's house and his father-in-law would feed the slaves.

Part 1 chapter 10
This chapter was the saddest of them all so far but it was also happy. It was sad when Fredrick had to go out and work all day and when he got weak he would sit and fall. This was sad because if Mr. Covey saw him he would kick him. One last time Fredrick had sat back down Mr. Covey got a hickory slab and hit him upside the head with it. Fredrick was bleeding really bad so he was tired and walked 7 miles to his masters house. He arrived later that day and the master let  him spend the night and he left early in the morning. When he got back Fredrick's friend Sandy and him had talked and Sandy said to carry a root with him so that he wouldn't get beat. This worked for the first couple of days but on one day it didn't. Fredrick and Mr. Covey ended up getting in a fight and Fredrick won!!This was the happy part. Mr. Covey lost and was bleeding but Fredrick wasn't. This made me happy. Fredrick was standing up for himself!! :) After  that, the last six months that Fredrick spent with Mr. Covey, he had never laid a finger upon Fredrick with anger anymore!! :)This was my favorite part of the chapter. Fredrick won!!!

Chapter 5,6,and 7 Questions and Comments

Hello class, my partner is Jenny.

Chapter 5
Q: Why didn't Fredrick want to stay with his brother and sisters on the plantation?
C: I felt sad when I found out that all he had was a coarse tow linen shirt.
PQ: Why was Baltimore so diffrent from Maryland?
PC: I felt sad for Fredrick because he didn't shed a tear in his departure from Colonel Lloyd's plantation.

Chapter 6
Q: Why was Mr. Auld so proctective over what his wife did?
C:  I felt that Mrs. Auld was nice to teach Fredrick his ABC's.
PQ: Why were city slaves treated better than plantation slaves?
PC: I felt happy for Fredrick when he learned his ABC's.

Chapter 7
Q: Did his master and mistress know that he traded bread for knowledge from the little boys?
C: I felt happy when he learned how to write.
PQ: Why did Fredick become so intrested in learning how to read and write?
PC: I thought Fredrck used smart plans in learning how to read and write.

Chapters 5,6, and 7

This part of this story wasn't that bad. Reading chapter 5 wasn't that bad but it was still sad how he suffered much from his own hunger and even more from the cold. All he wore was a coarse tow linen shirt. He wasn't old enough to go and work in the field so that's all he got. It was sad on the coldest nights that he had to steal a bag that was used for caring corn to mill. In this chapter he also got a new mistress and she was much nicer than the other ones he had.
Reading chapter six was kinda of sad but not really. It was sad when he told about the total opposite of how he was treated. The guy beat the girls and that was the only part really that was sad. The part that wasn't sad was that he got a new mistress and she taught him his ABC's and spelling. But the sad part about this is that the master found out and he got mad at the mistress and forbid her to keep teaching him these things.
This chapter was a happy ending for him. He got a new master and he was learning again how to read and write. His new mistress said that he should be treated like a human being and I agree. She wanted to treat him as a human being but she knew it was a dangerous to do. He learned how to be friends with little Caucasian boys. This was sad when he wanted to die and was saying this to the Irishmen. At the end of this chapter he learned how to write. I thought this part was exciting that he learned how to write.

My reaction to the Amistad

I thought that this was sad. The slaves were beaten and they had to stay in places were they could get puked or pooped on and that is gross and sad. The poor slaves would get beat until they bled and they would get thrown off the ships with chains tied around them and heavy rocks pulling them down. I would jump off the ship if  were a slave because I would rather die than go through that kind of stuff. If I had a baby on board with me I would try to take care of it and if I couldn't and I was getting beaten, to where I was bleeding then I would give the baby to someone else on the ship and I would jump off the ship and die.

Reaction to chaapters 2,3,and 4

After reading chapter two i was sad. This chapter was very sad. It was talking about how the slaves got their allowance of food and clothing yearly. Some children and people who didn't work didn't get their allowance of food and clothing. It also talked about when they didn't get up to the horn then they would get whipped by Mr. Severe. It seems sad that they had to live like this daily. It was also sad when they would sing songs for their sorrow and for their heart would be relieved with tears. This chapter was very sad because how they had to live.
After reading chapter three I thought that this was sad and interesting and weird. It was sad because some slaves got killed. This was also interesting and weird because Colonel Lloyd, the slave master, was so protective over his horses and stables at the Great house farm. This was a big and better plantation for the slaves. They worked here still but many were happier to be here then any other plantation. Colonel Lloyd cared for his horses so much that even if he thought they had to much of something or if a slight thing was wrong that he would whip the people taking charge of his horses. To me this was a poor way and a sad way to treat the slaves. This chapter was also about how the slaves could never talk bad about their masters and he said that " a still tongue makes a wise head" which means that  if you watch what you say then you won' get in trouble for it.
After reading chapter four I thought that this was rude. Mr. Gore was the new overseer or master and he was mean and the cruelest to the slaves. He never was happy or he never even joked. He killed a slave to teach the others a lesson of what not to do.

What is your reaction to Chapter 1?

Reaction to Chapter 1
I thought that chapter one was sad. This chapter introduces the reader into the beginning of Fredrick Douglass life. I would have to say that he went through a lot. Fredrick Douglass had a hard life. He didn't even know his own birthday. I thought it was sad when he had to witness his Aunt Hester getting beat. He had a master and is aunt had the same master and she had disobeyed the master by going out and she was found in company with Loyd's Ned. The master didn't like them. He had took her home and tied her up and then he beat her and made her bleed. Fredrick Douglass was there and he had to witness all of that. At the time of his Aunt's beating he was still a kid. He had never seen anything like this before because he had lived with his grandma for a while and now he sees the bloody scenes of people beating others. I thought that reading this story was very, very sad and I didn't like it. It was sad how he didn't know his birthday and he barely knew his mom. His mom died when e was about seven years old. This is a sad story but overall I think that the writer made this story paint a picture in my head.
