My essay topic

My topic was to create an argument that demonstrates how owning another human being can corrupt a person and negatively alter their character. The thing that I am trying to argue is that owning another human being can corrupt them and it can alter their character in life. I am stating facts that say why owning another human being is wrong and why it affects the slave. This is affecting how they think of others like they can become prejudice and/or racist and how it corrupts them in life by separating them from family and ruining their self esteem.

Chapter 11 reaction

In this chapter Fredrick was planning to escape. I liked how he escaped but he was hungry and homeless in New York. Then he met Mr. Ruggles who took him in so he had a place to live. At the end of this chapter it is talking about Fredrick going to anti-slavery meetings and was able to say what he wanted to. I liked how he finally got married and was happy.I was happy that he escaped slavery and was free. In the end at the appendix Fredrick talked about how religious people could be so cruel to the slaves. Religious people are usually nice and respect others but these people were different and they were mean to the slaves.

Questions:
1. How could the religious people be so mean to slaves and not think that it is wrong?
2. Why did Fredrick trust Mr. Ruggles?
Comments:
1. I felt happy when Fredrick escaped and was free from being a slave.
2. I like Mr. Ruggles.

Questions and Comments

Questions
Why did the slaveholders give holdiays off for their safety?
Why did the battle mode make Fredrick realize that he wanted to be free?
     Why did he enjoy teaching?

Comments
     This chapter was confusing.
I liked how he wasn't the only one wanting to be free an run away.

Chapter 10 reaction

I like how in this chapter Fredrick talks about him reading more. I think that when they were talking about the root that it is like a symbol that other slaves should do it so they can stand up for themselves like Fredrick did. This was talking about Fredrick talking about the north. This chapter was sad and weird and I liked how in this chapter Fredrick stood up for himself. Slaves should start to do what fredrick did.I like how Fredrick is starting to make more friends and have somewhat of a family.Mr. Freeland is a very nice guy it seems like and Fredrick says that he is one of the best slave masters he has had.

Reaction to chapters 8, 9, and part of 10

These were very sad and happy chapters to read...

Chapter 8
This chapter wasn't so sad as the other ones were. Reading chapter eight was sad how he had to move and he was missing the Baltimore boys that he shared and traded bread for lessons. I thought the saddest part was when Fredrick's grandma had served to the master faithfully and yet he took her to the woods, built her a little hut, and was saying it was her privilege that she supports herself there in her own loneliness. This is sad because she soon dies there and there was no one to help her or be there for her death.

Chapter 9
This chapter was also sad. It was sad and made me want to cry when he was talking about the lady (Henny), getting beat. Henny had fell into a fire when she was younger and she was burned very badly. Her hands were so burnt that she barley got to use them. The master beat Henny until she bled and sometimes he would tie her up all day and leave her there to whip her later. :( This was really sad. This chapter was also sad when Fredrick was watching his masters horse and he would let it run away to his master's father-in-law's house and his father-in-law would feed the slaves.

Part 1 chapter 10
This chapter was the saddest of them all so far but it was also happy. It was sad when Fredrick had to go out and work all day and when he got weak he would sit and fall. This was sad because if Mr. Covey saw him he would kick him. One last time Fredrick had sat back down Mr. Covey got a hickory slab and hit him upside the head with it. Fredrick was bleeding really bad so he was tired and walked 7 miles to his masters house. He arrived later that day and the master let  him spend the night and he left early in the morning. When he got back Fredrick's friend Sandy and him had talked and Sandy said to carry a root with him so that he wouldn't get beat. This worked for the first couple of days but on one day it didn't. Fredrick and Mr. Covey ended up getting in a fight and Fredrick won!!This was the happy part. Mr. Covey lost and was bleeding but Fredrick wasn't. This made me happy. Fredrick was standing up for himself!! :) After  that, the last six months that Fredrick spent with Mr. Covey, he had never laid a finger upon Fredrick with anger anymore!! :)This was my favorite part of the chapter. Fredrick won!!!

Chapters 5,6, and 7

This part of this story wasn't that bad. Reading chapter 5 wasn't that bad but it was still sad how he suffered much from his own hunger and even more from the cold. All he wore was a coarse tow linen shirt. He wasn't old enough to go and work in the field so that's all he got. It was sad on the coldest nights that he had to steal a bag that was used for caring corn to mill. In this chapter he also got a new mistress and she was much nicer than the other ones he had.
Reading chapter six was kinda of sad but not really. It was sad when he told about the total opposite of how he was treated. The guy beat the girls and that was the only part really that was sad. The part that wasn't sad was that he got a new mistress and she taught him his ABC's and spelling. But the sad part about this is that the master found out and he got mad at the mistress and forbid her to keep teaching him these things.
This chapter was a happy ending for him. He got a new master and he was learning again how to read and write. His new mistress said that he should be treated like a human being and I agree. She wanted to treat him as a human being but she knew it was a dangerous to do. He learned how to be friends with little Caucasian boys. This was sad when he wanted to die and was saying this to the Irishmen. At the end of this chapter he learned how to write. I thought this part was exciting that he learned how to write.

My reaction to the Amistad

I thought that this was sad. The slaves were beaten and they had to stay in places were they could get puked or pooped on and that is gross and sad. The poor slaves would get beat until they bled and they would get thrown off the ships with chains tied around them and heavy rocks pulling them down. I would jump off the ship if  were a slave because I would rather die than go through that kind of stuff. If I had a baby on board with me I would try to take care of it and if I couldn't and I was getting beaten, to where I was bleeding then I would give the baby to someone else on the ship and I would jump off the ship and die.

Reaction to chaapters 2,3,and 4

After reading chapter two i was sad. This chapter was very sad. It was talking about how the slaves got their allowance of food and clothing yearly. Some children and people who didn't work didn't get their allowance of food and clothing. It also talked about when they didn't get up to the horn then they would get whipped by Mr. Severe. It seems sad that they had to live like this daily. It was also sad when they would sing songs for their sorrow and for their heart would be relieved with tears. This chapter was very sad because how they had to live.
After reading chapter three I thought that this was sad and interesting and weird. It was sad because some slaves got killed. This was also interesting and weird because Colonel Lloyd, the slave master, was so protective over his horses and stables at the Great house farm. This was a big and better plantation for the slaves. They worked here still but many were happier to be here then any other plantation. Colonel Lloyd cared for his horses so much that even if he thought they had to much of something or if a slight thing was wrong that he would whip the people taking charge of his horses. To me this was a poor way and a sad way to treat the slaves. This chapter was also about how the slaves could never talk bad about their masters and he said that " a still tongue makes a wise head" which means that  if you watch what you say then you won' get in trouble for it.
After reading chapter four I thought that this was rude. Mr. Gore was the new overseer or master and he was mean and the cruelest to the slaves. He never was happy or he never even joked. He killed a slave to teach the others a lesson of what not to do.

What is your reaction to Chapter 1?

Reaction to Chapter 1
I thought that chapter one was sad. This chapter introduces the reader into the beginning of Fredrick Douglass life. I would have to say that he went through a lot. Fredrick Douglass had a hard life. He didn't even know his own birthday. I thought it was sad when he had to witness his Aunt Hester getting beat. He had a master and is aunt had the same master and she had disobeyed the master by going out and she was found in company with Loyd's Ned. The master didn't like them. He had took her home and tied her up and then he beat her and made her bleed. Fredrick Douglass was there and he had to witness all of that. At the time of his Aunt's beating he was still a kid. He had never seen anything like this before because he had lived with his grandma for a while and now he sees the bloody scenes of people beating others. I thought that reading this story was very, very sad and I didn't like it. It was sad how he didn't know his birthday and he barely knew his mom. His mom died when e was about seven years old. This is a sad story but overall I think that the writer made this story paint a picture in my head.
